    June 2011 Update

 

The road into Meat Cove is in good condition with temporary bridges suitable for large vehicles replacing the washed out ones, its possible to a good idea of the power of the flood from these vantage points. New bridges have been approved by the government and construction is scheduled to start in the next few months.

 

All area business are fully operational, the community has been busy over the winter undertaking the necessary repairs to the Internet Cafe and Community center and it is now fully operational.

The community is still working on financing to under take all the necessary repairs to the beach and board walk.
It is still possible for the adventurous to access the beach area with caution and witness first hand the power of the flood.

 

The popular area hiking trails with the exception of the River Board Walk are in good conditions and the views are as fantastic as ever.

 

   20 September 2010 Update

 

All area businesses are fully operational with the exception of the Welcome Center café, the Welcome Center is open but meals are not available yet.

 

Construction on the road into Meat Cove is on going, the bridge at Meat Cove by the Welcome Center which used to consist of 2 large culverts has been replaced with a bailey bridge, government officials hope to have a decision regarding a permanent replacement soon

 

Considerable work has been under taken by community members shoring up the foundations to the welcome center and repairing plumbing, repairs to the decks will be undertaken as soon as funding is available.

 

Community members have been busy clearing debris from the brook down stream of the Welcome Center. The damage to the boardwalk hiking trail was extensive but the community hopes to rebuild and have been busy salvaging materials from the old boardwalk.

 Considerable work will be required to clear the brook of debris.

 

Little work has been undertaken on the beach an important element of the tourist business due to the difficulty in accessing it. (The original road bridge was carried away). Engineers have been studying the situation, this is going to be a tough problem for the community.

 

Area hiking trails are all useable although the description of back country trails has taken on more meaning, expect trees across trails and erosion damage in places, with care some newly created fords can be crossed with dry feet where culverts on the old road carried away.

 Many tourists come to the area to enjoy the hiking trails and the community is anxious to undertake maintenance and expand on the trail system as resources become available.
